Guilty As Charged

Believe me there have been some days when I come in to start my workday and I'm genuinely surprised security officers aren't waiting to apprehend me at the gate. It's always a good sign when I don't get stopped at a security shack and it's an even better sign when I arrive at my desk and no officers are there, either. Today was one of those days though where I half expected to be thrown out. Nothing out of the ordinary happened though. At least not right away. I checked my email, no stinging rebuke was there from anyone in management. No scathing voicemails of reprimand were on my office phone answering machine. Everything was in order. Management was silent in response to my Backstabber email. I had a solid case, provided evidence that could not be challenged, and won. Backstabber's peers must have been laughing their asses off at him through the morning and talking shit about him. At least I hoped they had. And there's no doubt in my mind Backstabber ended up in some very uncomfortable private discussions with his boss.

So I scanned over tests currently running in the lab, grabbed my wrenches, and started off for the chamber area. Greasy Guy left two chambers open with instruments sitting in them. As usual he was nowhere to be seen. Reviewing test data to determine which boxes had passed I began marking off completed tests on each unit's paperwork. In my mind I was thinking two or three steps ahead about organizing the day's work. Which chambers to load up next, which instruments needed retest, that sort of thing. Rapidly going deeper into thought someone nearby called me by name and it startled me. Turning around I looked up to see Backstabber.

The chamber area is a good distance away from where our management staff's cubicles are located. Backstabber never comes back here. I've never seen him here before today anyway. He seemed unusually shifty and nervous standing there. Not knowing what to expect, I decided to let him do all the talking. I looked him in the eye and said, "Hey." Backstabber told me that I was doing a good job in the area like we were suddenly best buddies. Then he rambled about getting those miscellaneous instruments ordered so I could finish that test rack build. His boss must have thrashed him but good for this to be happening. I responded to him with a quick nod and turned back to my work. I was about to lose my composure and begin uncontrollably laughing in his face. He walked away and when I was sure he wasn't within earshot I broke out laughing like a motherfucker.

I nailed you, stupid.
